Hey all,

Ugh, I cant seem to go very long without disappearing from here @_@.  I always forget poor DA, shame on me.

So, a lot has happened with me in the last 5 months or so.  I moved, finished Schoolism courses, and changed jobs.  WOO!  Im now in a spectacular position working with spectacular, amazing artists.  I was away for quite awhile training in another state, which is was difficult but also fun as hell. :)  I got to work alongside some of the best artists Ive met in my career to date.  Plus they were all super nice guys and gals.  Im very fortunate to have had this turn of events come along in my life.  :worship:

I've been nuking various things here on DA and cleaning up.  I really wanted to deconstruct the entire account and start over, but I dont want to lose my account name, feh.  So Im just going through the ridiculous process of hand-deleting stuff.  I was going to destroy everything, but someone commented to me that they like seeing people's older work.  It shows how much one can improve and change.  I do agree!  I've been taking my personal art in a very, very different direction, so my new uploads will hopefully reflect that :)

OH!!  About my Schoolism..I need to start uploading my assignments here.  Sorry for dropping the ball there.  I really enjoyed the Intro to Digital Painting course and got a great result in that class.  The character design course was another story.  It was very difficult and required a lot more drawing than I had time for.  I didnt do so well there, but it was awesome nonetheless.  Both courses were worth their weight in gold.  Im taking one more class this June, the Bobby Chu painting course.  I totally can't wait for that!

Anyways, sorry for MIA-ness.  I hope to upload new and improved stuff here soon ^_^.  I have a big con coming up but it's my last for this year.  I'd like to put together a comprehensive set of uploads about my Schoolism experience.  I want to show you guys what they do there.  That site and it's instructors ROCK.  If you can ever afford the guided experience there, it is truly wonderful.

PS:  Oh shizz, and I finally broke down and bought myself a Cintiq 21 UX.   :headbang: A little gift to myself after the past three, hard years.  Super excited to get to rip it out and try it! <--needs my bigger desk to arrive for it

Hi all,

so I've officially become a student of the amazing collective at Schoolism.com.  I am currently taking the Character Design course with Steven Silver.  I also have Intro to Digital Painting with Andrew Hou beginning on the 23rd or so.  I wanted to write a little entry here to talk about my experience thus far ^_^.

First off, I chose the guided courses at Schoolism.  They are a lot more expensive than the self-taught classes, but they are exactly the thing for me.   I dont know about you, but I learn very visually.  I need to _see_ what people are talking about if Im to fully absorb what they're trying to show me.  Actually watching Mr. Silver draw over your work is like seeing a rickety shack turn magically into a house.  The small things he does to show you how to create life in your work is astoundingly cool.  It also shows you that your mistakes may not be as difficult to fix as you think.  On the flip side, you start to understand _why_ you're making the same mistakes over and over.  It shows how the gaps in your knowledge are affecting your work as a whole.

Something else that's very cool about Schoolism, is that you can view other people's videos as well as your own.  I got my first video feedback yesterday.  Before that, I could view my classmates' videos, as well as previous students' videos.  Nifty as all get out!  This lets you see how other people are attacking their problems, and it also shows you the different levels of skill everyone is at.  This is very inspirational.  There's everyone from real television animation pros to novices.  Everyone's striving to get better, and you can watch and learn along with them. :)

In my personal video, Mr. Silver didnt have to draw over as much as I thought he would.  I did an ok job with the first assignment, which you can view in my gallery.  His advice boiled down to letting my lines breathe a bit more, varying my shapes, and pulling shapes away from eachother.  I tend to draw very tightly.  Ever since I was a child I've been attracted to tight, super clean, super finished art.  I became really influenced by Don Bluth animation, anime, Disney, typical 2D work.  This type of work is also very clean, so as a kid I thought "Oh, I need to stuff super clean if it's going to be good!"  Thus began my path of squinchy, crowded, too-clean art.  I hope to break myself of this, and this class is a great start.  There's also a broad range of people in my class, including some amazingly talented designers.  -art swoon-

I'll be posting a lot about my Schoolism experience here on DA for you guys.  Please come follow along as I jaunt into the world of learning!  These guys are master wizards at their craft, so I expect the learning process to be nothing short of magical.  I feel like these are the missing pieces to my art education puzzle.  I already feel more confident and I cant wait to move along.  :D  Watch for my next assignment soon.  Arts away!

~Shawnna

I've done cons for about 15 years now, give or take.

This is the first con I've ever sold at where I didn't break even on the table cost.   It was so bad we tore down on Saturday night and decided not to set up on Sunday.  I know that this happens to everyone who does cons at least once.  I've seen it happen.  Artists crying at their table, asking others what they did wrong, etc.  They look for a reason why people arent giving their work attention.  I tell you, it's eye opening, and it's definitely a stab in the face if you've never experienced it.  I know it wasn't the con itself, as others around me seemed to be doing just fine.  It was my time to fail miserably and cry under my table.

I used to use cons as a way to share personal work, crafts, little weird art experiments and the like.  It gave me a nice outlet to actually do my own stuff outside the 9-5.  But, my work has suffered severely over the last few years.  There's probably many reasons for this, but I think the cons have a part in it as well.  It is very difficult to continue to cater to the changing crowds.  Styles that are popular one year aren't popular the next.  If you dont draw a ton of stuff from this season's popular shows, you're cut out of the market.  People rip off your merchandise ideas, packaging ideas, styles, banners you name it.  Its really tough to stay above the fray, and continue to be successful.  It really sucks to bust your ass on new stuff, but the only thing people seem to want is the exact thing you never seem to have.  :\

Im set to do a couple more shows, but no more after that, not for a while.  Got signed up for a lot of art classes in 2012, so Id like to use the next year to totally reinvent my art.  Im sick of my old crap, Im sick of the g'damned buttons, Im sick of crappy fanart, Im sick of cheap ass chotchkies.  Granted, I have nice chotchkies, but nobody ever wants those.  I can't even give those away (which is what I end up doing anyway).

Here's to 2012, and the land of renewal and less suck.  :)

Hey all, how are you doing?

I was looking through some art blogs this weekend and found a couple more guys who teach at the Schoolism site.  I kept thinking I should go check those classes out, and while Im there I should check the Bobby Chiu schedule.  Oh my Hell, his next two classes are full!!!  BLAST!  #_#  I had planned to take the late Spring class, but it's gone, so I signed up for the Summer class before it too goes away.  Man, ouch in the wallet, but that is the one class I am pining for super badly.  Next year is going to be filled with awesome :D (I hope!)

Havent been doing a whole lot of art lately.  My stupid back/leg problem is firing up really bad.  Work is slowing enough to where I can go get the other half of my diagnostic tests done.  I never thought that my ass hurting would ever affect my ability to do art, but wow.  Killing me slowly...  I can't sit, cant walk, cant stand, cant run.   I just want to be a bionic torso with a skateboard and tablet bolted to it.

In a less sad direction, I'll be at Austin Comicon this weekend selling my wares at a table!  Im really behind on getting stuff together cause I've been so busy and busted.  I'll also be at Blue Genie Art Bazaar again this year, woo!  I love that show, it's such a great local gathering of artists, sculptors, crafters etc.  Excitement!

And now, back to work...and maybe to find a quiet place to stretch my pissed off leg.  Grrrrr.

So wow,

I think the new MLP show is popular.  Hahahaha that's so awesome/retarded to me.  When I was a little girl, I was such a HUGE fan of MLP.  My mom has this photo of me in the tub, and you can't see any water, cause it's covered in ponies.  Also there's ponies surrounding me on the ledge of the tub.  I freakin LOOORRRRVED ponies.  I still do in fact...but...err, I like the classic ponies.   The new ones havent hit me yet.  My friend tried to show me the new show at a con, and I think we were just too busted n' tired to pay attention.  That and my dude was threatening to dive out the window if we made him watch anymore >_<;   I do want to see it tho, cause I have got to know what the fuss is about...

Also, remember how I said Id post sketches I did with the Cintiq?  Apparently I've grown into a huge art wussy.  Im afraid to show anyone anything anymore.  It's like Im 12...only when I was 12 I was way more confident 9_9.  I did do some nice pencil/paper stuff for work, but Im definitely scared to show that stuff to anyone.  Even the people I should be showing.  -wees on floor and crawls away-

Ive been browsing DA a lot more recently, and I forgot how fun it is. :)  Been loading up the favorites with new things, finding new artists, etc.  I love it here, even if it is a bit of a cluster sometimes.  ^^  Ok, time for workings.  I hope to post new art soon, as I have a couple big shows coming up, which I need to make stuff for...badly.  @_@  Stay tuned!

So I broke down and managed to get my hands on a lovingly pre-owned Cintiq 12 WX.  I wanted to try one of these guys out before I made any rash expenditures on something bigger.  I finally got to hook it up and play with it last night.  It is definitely a huge change from a tablet, which means it's going to take some getting used to. I talked to a lot of people before I went for this, and they all said it did take time to gel with it, but after that, it's like ice cream and donuts good. :D

The drawing part of the Cintiq feels great, in fact it's better than I thought it would be.  I always hear about people complaining about the parallax but I didnt have any problems with that at all.  It was very easy to calibrate.  I actually like the smooth, plastic screen feel as opposed to paper.  My body's kind of jacked up, so the less resistance on my hands the better.  It's super responsive, no lag, and it's just plain fun :D.  Its fun to waggle your hand in whatever way you want, and the lines appear exactly how you think they would.  It's not like with the Intuos, where you get the eyeball/hand awkwardness, so when you draw one way, your line can (and probably will) go another.

So far the only thing that's giving me trouble is the workspace.  The 12 is pretty small when you factor in all the Pshop menus and stuff.  When it first spun up, half of my pallets were wandering around off-screen.  I had to finagle them back into view a bit.  Then when they were all there, there was little room for an actual image.  I've heard it takes some time to get your work area set up, but once you do it's super cherry.  :D  Right now I can only use the Cintiq with my work computer, which is a Macbook.  My awesome PC at home is too entrenched in junk and my desk is the size of a Chiclet :|.  Working on fixing that after we move in Jan, bleh.  When I have more room I can set the Cintiq as a dual display and get the screen toggle working like it should.

Also, people werent kidding about the jungle of wires that comes with this guy.  It's Wire City, just nouth of Wire Town!  It makes it a little bit unwieldy at first, but one learns to cope with these things.  This is the digital age, everything's got a mass of wires on it now.  Except anything Apple.  9_9  (pssst, Wacom, those guys can do it, so can you!)

Anyways, joyful times!  Im super glad I was able to make this purchase.  Ive wanted a Cintiq for years, but I was too afraid to make the jump.  Also I was never happy with the earlier models.  Too much lag, the screens were not great, etc.  The first time I messed with them tho was gen 1, like 9 years ago or something. <---Im getting oooold  Today's models seem great, and everyone I spoke to personally about them had nothing but rave reviews.  As much as I wanted to throw down on one of the big ones, I wanted to test the 12 out first.  It's easier to take a $700 hit than a $2400 hit....to the bawls....gottdayum. @_@  But if I like this one enough and it helps my speed, yada yada, I'll invest in a bigger one later ^^.

I'll post up some sketches and stuff when I have enough of them cobbled together.  :D  One thing I do notice...this thing helps your speed quite a bit.  Rock the heck on!

I've started reorganizing and cleaning up the galleries.  Im not deleting as much as I had planned.  -sigh-  I like my old crappy art :{.  Even if it's crappy, I still had love in my heart when I tried to craft it's crappyness, hahah.  I've actually made folders now and Im just moving things around to new, respectable homes.  :)  As much as I want to nuke the whole place, I just can't do it.  I know that even if I dont like my stuff, someone out there might, so I dont want to take that away.  I know I've been heartbroken in the past when artists I love have some kind of crisis of self and yank their galleries.  Bleh.  I hates that feeling.  Anyhow, hopefully the reorg will make this place less sloppy. :D

In personal news, Ive been working in the darkness a lot to try and improve myself.  Ive been so inspired lately by some artists I've recently connected with.  They just astound me with their kung fu.  The fire has been litteth under my arse!  The day job as been pretty severe for the last several months tho, so I havent had time to color and finish things.  There's also a pretty nasty health problem I've been going through for about a year.  Ive got something bad going on with my back, which makes sitting -insanely painful-.  :(  This means that even when I do sit down to draw, I rarely have the strength to finish anything.  I went through months of therapy and stuff, but nobody could help.  It's kind of a mystery as to what's wrong.  Going to a new doc soon, hopefully they can figure out what the deal is.  Right now I am limited to sketching, and day job work.  Anything else is usually pushed due to my back pain.  Stupid back.  Made of shards of glass and piss it is.

I start the Schoolism stuff in a couple of months, and I am really ready for that. :D  Im trying to prepare by getting my workspace at home in order.  I really want a height adjustable desk so I can stand and work, but my GOD those things are expensive.  I hear it really helps though if you have back issues.  Im also trying desperately to get a Cintiq on Ebay or Craigslist.  I want to try and land a used 12 to see how those things work.  I'd plunk out for a big one, but not til Im sure I can use it ok.  Newfangled teknology is newfangled.

So that's what is going on with me.  I am still doing a ton of art...it's just having to sit while I deal with my health and other things. :  To everyone who's still here, Im sorry for the lack of updates and things.  As soon as I get my spine chrome-plated and healed, I shall return!  <3 <3 <3

I think it's probably time for me to clean sweep this place.  I have way too much hideous, old animu art up here.  -embarrassed-  Also lots of old sketches and dumpage.   Soooo, if there's anything up in here that you like, you should probably screen cap it or save soon.  Im going to be getting rid of about 95% of this business very soon.  @_@  -sharpens the digital axe-

Hi again all!

Wowee, two journals in a row from me!  Its like Return of the Living Shawnna... O_o.

I wanted to ask here, have any of my fellow watchers and/or deviants taken any of the Schoolism classes?  In the last few weeks, I've heard from multiple close sources that these classes are amazing.  My fellow game artist friend and I are embarking on this 'improvement quest' together, so we're both signing up for some of these courses.  Im very curious to hear about people's experiences!

So far I've signed up for Intro to Digital Painting, and Im considering doing the Character Design course.  Man, it's like a punch in the butt of money though, ouch.  Im sure it's worth it, it's just a hard knock right atm. @_@  I really, really want to take the Bobby Chiu course, but alas, he's full up til mid next year, buurrr..  I hope the intro course can help me with the basics enough to overcome my self-hate with Photoshop. <--confidence level -4000

Anyhow, please talk here if you have taken some of these classes!  And if nobody has...well, I shall be a first, and I'll be happy to memo all of my experiences here for you. <3

Burp back to work. #_#

BTW, check out this lady's fine work. :D  She also took one of the Bobby classes.  Truly inspirational.  Im like a tiny art kitten, purring at this person's feet, -mew-

Sorry for being MIA for so long!  I wonder if I have any watchers left @_@.

Ive let my art sort of fall by the wayside as I continue to bust ass at the daily grind.  BUT, I did just sign up for Schoolism's intro class for next year.  Enough of this messing around.  Time to do something with myself before I get too old.

Man, I am the sad.

Went to Printsess today just check out their products and see if there was news, and it turns out they're not making one of my favorite products anymore: custom sticker sheets.  Im really bummed as I had planned to do some new sets for a Christmas show this year.  What makes this especially bummed-out-worthy is that there is no place else that makes a similar product.  Other places only make large custom stickers, or ugly pre-cut stickers on a roll, blerrr.  This probably means my only option is to try a Chinese production company, and I just don't have that kind of money :(. (Plus I can imagine the logistics and communication would be very difficult.)

Anyone out there have any suggestions?  <--sad panda face

Hi all,

it's come time for me to attack something that I've been meaning to do for years: creating an online shop.

I have absolutely no idea how to do this.  I can design a store no problem. But, I do not know the meat and potatoes of code enough at all.  I have no clue how to set up paypal and all the fancy majiggery.

Anyways...wow...do I have a ton of research and grinding ahead of me to figure this out.  I will probably be a fail whale at it, but here's to hope!

Bloo, this is extremely late ^^;.  I apologize.  I needed some major recovery time after the con this year.

Unfortunately, Akon this year was a slight bust for me, at least if we're talking the business end of it.  I invested a lot of time and money into some new items and art that didn't work out.  I was very sad, but it happens.  It has caused me to do some reflecting on my work in general.  There is a need for a whole new focus...as I'm just tired of the anime fanart cycle.  I am now where my friend was at a few years ago.  There's just nothing out right now that I want to draw.  So, that means I'm drawing stuff that I still like, but now that stuff is considered 'old'.  Bleach, Naruto...say goodbye.  Say hello to Hetalia and Vocaloid and a few other things I have no interest in. :

What this means is I now get to venture down the treacherous road of ORIGINAL ART.  OMG.  Finding something I like to draw that people also want to buy.  I am riddled with fear.  Most people can tell you, it is very hard to sell original art (unless you're extremely well known online or an art god..preferably both..).  Also, I am noticing different art style trends and how my work completely doesn't fall into them.  I'm not interested in copying those trends 100%, but I'd like to see if I can't meld a bit of it into my stuff.  :)

Also, I need to find an overall zen and loosen up my work.  I have always been fond of very tightly-done, clean art.  I'm finding a lot more painterly, hand-drawn type of art at cons now as opposed to finely inked, cel-shaded work.  I have been wanting to try a bit of art in this style, so here's my giant shove forward into it!  It may force me to relax a bit and not try so hard to make things 'correct', which can lead to 'boring' and 'stiff'. <--where I'm now :worry:

The upside to my items doing poorly at Akon is that I now have lots of it to sell online!  I'm working on an actual store, finally, after vacillating over it for years.  I have no clue of how to do it, but I am working on the design and hope to have it up within a few months.

Yay, I'll try to update soon with some of the art I did for the con :).  Perhaps you guys will like it more than they did. ;_;  I have GOT to start going to other cons outside of the state.  I'd also like to try a fur con.  It'd be nice to go someplace more fan and art driven, less commercial.

Thanks for reading, all!  I have to come here more often..I mean it's a little frustrating, but not nearly as frustrating as Shirt.Woot, HAHAHA!  :relax:

Man,

everytime I come back here, I find everything has gotten 10 times worse than it was when I left.  It's like adding more layers of bad to an already bad sandwich.

I keep leaving DA because it's getting overrun with p0rny imagery, stamps, flash, trashy photos, kids and drama.  Not only this, but every time they change the code to try and make it better, they make it way worse.

I've been a paid member for years now, hoping that by paying my meager dues, I can avoid some of the troublesome doodoo that non-paid members have to deal with.  Apparently my money doesn't go that for anymore. :  Why, oh why, do I not even get fullview deviations anymore?  I have to click the image to get it to upsize to it's actual upload size.  As if I'd want to see it any other way?  Really guys?  And the slideshow thing is just dumb.  It's just more code to break.

I need to do some major, major cleaning house here.  I have like 10,000 deviations to look at.  I actually dread this.  I used to love coming here, but eeesh.  It's the Land of Endless Messages and stuff upon stuffstuffstuffington.

Sorry for the downer post guys.  Been a rough time lately.  I used to come over to my DA page for some solace, but man..I get so mad when they jack with the system!!!  RARRRFFT!  I need some DA zen.  Maybe it's time to delete everything and start anew -floats in the air like a buddha fairy-

Before mass cleanings, I shall begin the mammoth task of going through all bajillion deviations in my inbox =_=.

Hi all,

I wanted to share a video here for the new game our company just released, Stickman Rocks!  This is a casual game for the iPhone.  It was just released a couple of weeks ago and is now being featured on the iTunes App store :).  Here is a great video of the game being played over at AppSpy.com:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=PR8ep3…

I was the sole artist on this project, and it is the first time I've had the opportunity to create a game like this.  It was a lot of fun and taught me quite a bit.  If you'd like to check it out, please visit the iTunes store today and check the top of the apps page!

If you'd like to see more of what our company makes, please visit the website below!

Thank you so much for everyone taking a look!

Convention season woes

Hi all,
happy new week!

So, con season is upon us.  It's time for all us art folk to travel around, sleepless and hungry, as we peddle our wares to the fandom masses.

These days the hardest part of con season is actually GETTING a table. We are starting off the year a bit mopey, as we missed out on a table for a con we really wanted to go to: San Japan.  They sold out their alley on Jan 1st or so.  The con isnt until July, but apparently every 12 yr old at Ikkicon went and registered for a table at SJ.  -sigh  Anyways, very sad about that, as it was supposed to be a good replacement for AnimeFest, which we won't be going to again.  What it looks like we may end up doing is attending two small cons in the fall to replace the bigger ones.

We are super happy to be attending Akon this year though!  Wooooh!  Getting into Akon now is like a gladiator battle.  It's getting harder each year.  My personal opinion is that cons are going to have to start better monitoring who gets into the alley.  There's TOO MANY people, and not enough of them who are serious about the matter.  That's a whole other can of worms though ^^;...

Another thing I'm personally struggling with is what to do for the cons this year.  I had mentioned in a previous journal that I don't know what to draw.  I sat down last night to do some new chibis, and I literally had to grill my brain.  There's nothing new out that I like enough to draw. :  I dont want to do original charas, because it's like trying to sell dynamite, i.e. very hard...  So, I'm just doing some more art of charas I like and hoping others still like them too.  Also just doing some random cute stuff that may appeal to non-fan type :).

Lastly, our display is being a pain.  I stood back at the last show we went to, Anime Matsuri, and was just unhappy about the way stuff looked.  So I'm racking the head on how to make our table a bit more professional looking.  Hopefully I can do something effective that wont cost an arm and a leg, or weigh a metric ass-ton.  I've already spent a bootyload on prints and supply stuff, gaaahhh.  Cons are expensive, man.

Anyways, that's all for me today!  I'm hoping to have a bunch of new items that I can actually put up for sale online soon.  :D  I need to give my poor empty Etsy store some love, or perhaps follow in the footsteps of the great :iconmissmonster: and give BigCartel a try. :).

Off to work!
